GWO High Voltage training (Wind Industry) Working with high voltage in the wind industry

A GWO (Global Wind Organisation) High Voltage training is a specialized course for individuals working with high voltage in the wind energy industry. This training lasts 3 days.

Occupational accidents involving electricity, whether large or small, occur almost daily. Legislation therefore mandates specific training for anyone working with electrical installations.

Target Audience

This training program is designed for personnel working in or around high-voltage (HV) installations within wind farms, for both technical and operational roles. This includes, among others:

  • Wind turbine technicians (particularly those progressing toward high-voltage responsibilities)
  • High-voltage engineers and electrical technicians involved in wind farm infrastructure
  • Supervisors or team leaders overseeing high-voltage operations
  • New personnel transitioning to high-voltage environments who require foundational knowledge
  • HSE (Health and Safety) officers who need insight into the specific risks and procedures surrounding high voltage
  • Project or site managers seeking a better understanding of high-voltage systems and legal requirements

The course is suitable for individuals with a basic knowledge of electrical engineering or experience in wind energy, with the aim of increasing competence in high-voltage systems, safety, communication protocols, and the regulatory frameworks relevant to wind farms.

What prior knowledge is required to attend this training?

The participant must have a personal profile in WINDA and provide their WINDA ID prior to the training. The e-learning can be started up to a maximum of 4 weeks before the start date of the classroom training. We advise you to complete the e-learning at least 48 hours before the first classroom session. The deadline to register for the Blended Course is 4 days before the start date of the classroom training.

Participants in this training must possess the basic knowledge, skills, and competencies to work safely on low-voltage installations. They must be capable of performing tasks where they are exposed to the hazards and risks of low voltage, supported by previous work experience in the electrical field. This ensures they are technically competent enough to successfully follow and complete the training. Additionally, participants must have completed training equivalent to GWO BTT Electrical and GWO CoHE Electrical.

The objective of this training

The objective of this training is to prepare participants—through both theory and practical training—to safely operate and secure high-voltage installations according to a documented SSOW (Safe System of Work). Upon completion of this course, candidates are expected to participate in training specifically focused on the specific SSOW and high-voltage guidelines within their own working environment.

Which topics are covered?

  • HV safety principles: human factors, risk awareness, hazard management
  • Recognition of HV systems: components, barriers, and classification
  • Regulations & SSOW: compliance with national and company-specific regulations
  • Roles & responsibilities: isolations, earthing, and switching operations
  • Risk assessment & documentation: planning, LOTO procedures (Lock Out – Tag Out), switching instructions
  • HV switching procedures: safe isolation, earthing, and re-energization using practical equipment and scenarios
  • Emergency response: protocols for high-voltage faults and incidents

Examination

The participant must have a personal profile in WINDA and provide their WINDA ID prior to the training. The e-learning can be started up to a maximum of 4 weeks before the start date of the classroom training. We advise you to complete the e-learning at least 48 hours before the first classroom session. The deadline to register for the Blended Course is 4 days before the start date of the classroom training.

Participants are assessed throughout the training via observation and questioning, both to support the learning process and to monitor progress toward the learning objectives. As part of the final assessment, a written test is also administered to confirm that the knowledge-based outcomes have been achieved.

Completing the GWO High Voltage Operations module provides a foundation for working safely with high voltage. Following this, participants must gain practical experience under supervision to build confidence and meet company- or site-specific standards. Progression to authorization is typically expected within three years. If this is not achieved, refresher training may be required. The duty holder determines when an individual is ready for authorization, in accordance with the SSOW and applicable regulations. Once authorized, repeating the training is generally not necessary.

Important!

Upon successful completion of this blended training, the delegate will receive a GWO High Voltage Operations certificate with no expiry date, which will be uploaded to WINDA.
